Tarot is a structured symbolic language. A reading combines the traditional meaning of a card, the position it occupies, the surrounding cards, and the real-life context of the question.

The three layers of interpretation

• Archetype: the universal pattern shown by the card.
• Position: whether the card describes the past, present, challenge, advice, outcome, or another role.
• Context: what the seeker is actually experiencing.

The deck contains 22 Major Arcana cards and 56 Minor Arcana cards. They work together like the main plot and daily scenes of a story.

Major Arcana

Major Arcana cards often describe identity, transformation, major lessons, turning points, or forces that feel larger than ordinary events.

Minor Arcana

Minor Arcana cards usually describe daily behavior, emotions, conversations, work, money, relationships, habits, and immediate choices.

Each suit governs a different area of experience and is linked to an element.

• Wands — Fire: will, creativity, confidence, ambition, attraction, initiative.
• Cups — Water: emotion, relationships, empathy, intuition, memory, healing.
• Swords — Air: thought, truth, communication, analysis, worry, conflict.
• Pentacles — Earth: money, work, health, the body, home, resources, stability.

The numbered cards show development from beginning to completion. The suit changes the subject, while the number shows the stage.

• Ace: raw potential, beginning, invitation.
• Two: choice, balance, partnership, tension between two forces.
• Three: growth, collaboration, expression.
• Four: structure, stability, boundaries, pause.
• Five: disruption, conflict, instability, adjustment.
• Six: transition, support, harmony, recovery.
• Seven: testing, strategy, uncertainty, evaluation.
• Eight: momentum, repetition, mastery, restriction.
• Nine: culmination, intensity, independence, nearing completion.
• Ten: completion, consequence, saturation, transition into a new cycle.

Court cards can represent people, roles, attitudes, or stages of development. They are not limited to age or gender.

• Page: student, message, curiosity, early development.
• Knight: pursuit, movement, intensity, testing through action.
• Queen: inner mastery, emotional or intuitive authority, mature embodiment.
• King: outward command, leadership, structure, responsibility.

A reversed card does not automatically mean the opposite of the upright meaning, and it does not automatically mean something bad.

Common reversal patterns

• Blocked or delayed energy
• An internal process rather than an outward event
• Excess, imbalance, or overexpression
• Avoidance, denial, or resistance
• Recovery or release from the upright difficulty

Before reading the written meaning, study the image. Tarot communicates through posture, direction, objects, weather, landscape, color, distance, and movement.

Questions to ask

• Where is the figure looking?
• What is moving, and what is still?
• What appears protected, hidden, threatened, or offered?
• What color dominates the image?
• Does the scene feel open, confined, peaceful, or unstable?

A spread should be read as one connected story. Start with each position, then look across the entire group.

Patterns to notice

• Repeated suits or numbers
• Major Arcana concentration
• Movement from left to right
• Figures facing toward or away from one another
• Contrasts between action and stillness
• A progression from tension to resolution

Building a Three-Card Spread

A three-card reading works best when every position has a clear job. Begin with a simple structure such as Past • Present • Future, Situation • Challenge • Advice, or Mind • Heart • Action.

• Read each position first: explain what the card contributes in its assigned role.
• Look for movement: notice whether the energy improves, intensifies, repeats, or changes direction.
• Find the bridge: identify the middle card or repeated theme connecting the first and third cards.
• End with one message: summarize the spread as a single practical story instead of three separate definitions.

Tarot usually gives more useful guidance when the question invites insight, choice, and action.

Stronger question styles

• What am I overlooking?
• What action would support the best outcome?
• What pattern needs to change?
• How can I approach this more clearly?

A responsible reading should increase clarity and personal agency rather than fear or dependence.

• Do not replace legal, medical, financial, or safety professionals.
• Avoid fear-based claims about curses, death, betrayal, or disaster.
